Gurez Valley has officially made its way onto the adventure tourism map after the launch of a 482-meter zipline at Markote.
This milestone is part of a new push for border tourism and experiential travel to transform this already remote area of north Kashmir into a top destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
The stunning scenery and pristine waterways of this border district have remained relatively untouched for several decades; however, through the Government’s forward thinking approach to border tourism, the region has begun to shed its isolation and embrace sustainable experiential travel.
The zipline that has just been opened allows visitors to fly high above the Kishanganga River, providing stunning views of the sapphire mountains with lush fields, as well as from above the lush valley bottoms below.
The creation of this zipline not only provides visitors with plenty of thrills and excitement but is also a much-needed economic stimulus to the communities
In addition to providing visitors with an unforgettable experience, the construction of zip lines and other modern-day adventure sports will help the valley grow into a complete travel destination where local people will also benefit from increased hotel room availability (homestays), guided tours, and hospitality.
The combination of modern-day adventure sports and the valley’s rich Dard-Shin cultural heritage will provide the traveler with a comprehensive and immersive travel experience.
In addition, the process of developing former border areas into busy adventure destinations is a clear demonstration that we have entered a successful period where peace has been achieved between regions.
Both domestic and international tourists are now able to access these once closed-off territories (i.e., border regions) and therefore demonstrate how even the most remote areas of the world can offer incredible opportunities for exploration.
To say the new zipline at Markote is just a zip line would be a disservice to the potential of this ride and also to the future of Gurez as a tourism destination. The zip line will provide guests with an unparalleled experience through the heart of Kashmir’s wilderness and untouched natural beauty.
