The decision made by the Jammu and Kashmir Government, to implement the use of Mother Tongue/ Home language as the Medium of Instruction for Early Years Education, is an example of a Historical Policy that has demonstrated Forward Thinking for the Jammu & Kashmir Education System.
The Policy provides a foundational change in education policy in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the NIPUN Bharat Mission. The basis of this Policy lies on the understanding that Children learn more effectively when taught in their Cultural Language or Language of the Home.
Through the implementation of this Policy, the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir will be building a foundation for Children to experience Early Years Education (EYE) through a positive lens, instead of an overwhelming use of an unknown Language.
Research has shown that providing Children the opportunity to teach Children in their Mother Tongue/ Home language will provide the Children with Cognitive Growth, Emotional Security and Academic Success.
In addition, by creating a comprehensive strategy for implementing Mother Tongue/ Home language as the Medium Of Instruction in Early Years Education, Jammu & Kashmir is preserving the Local Culture, Language and Story for future generations.
The Policy creates a progressive framework to enable the development of students’ confidence in their ability to succeed, as well as their ability to succeed through using different Languages and in developing their learning opportunities.
An environment will be established so that building literacy and numeracy skills will connect students better with themselves, their families, their communities, and their school.
Education and the overall quality of education will increase significantly in this area. All students will have many opportunities throughout their school life that are not reliant upon their ability to communicate in one language or upon their ability to learn in one particular language.
Because the J&K government wants to create a positive, happy, natural and enjoyable environment for young learners during their early years, children are learning through play and learning in a fun, natural and enjoyable way for their first few years in school.
