Cabinet adopts resolution marking historic feat
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday adopted a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history after completing 4,399 consecutive days in office, surpassing the previous record of 4,398 continuous days held by Jawaharlal Nehru between 1952 and 1964.
The resolution described June 10, 2026, as a historic milestone in India’s democratic journey and said the achievement reflected the country’s democratic consciousness, public trust and the power of public participation. It stated that the record was a manifestation of the unprecedented support extended by the people to a leader guided by the principle of “Nation First”.
The Cabinet extended its congratulations and best wishes to the Prime Minister and noted that the milestone coincides with the completion of 12 years of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government under his leadership. It further observed that Modi is approaching 25 years of continuous service as Head of Government.
The resolution highlighted that India had, after six decades, elected an NDA government for a third consecutive term. It described the Prime Minister’s leadership as being marked by sensitivity, restraint, intent and decisiveness.
Recalling Modi’s declaration in 2014 that he would serve as the country’s “Pradhan Sevak”, the Cabinet said his governance had been guided by the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”. It stated that the welfare of the poor had remained central to government policy and cited the delivery of pucca houses, electricity, drinking water connections and direct benefit transfers on an unprecedented scale.
The resolution also referred to the distribution of free food grains to more than 80 crore people and free medical treatment to over 60 crore economically weaker citizens. According to the Cabinet, these measures strengthened national self-confidence and enabled more than 25 crore people to overcome poverty.
Highlighting youth-focused initiatives, the resolution said India had emerged as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem and strengthened its scientific capabilities through achievements such as Mission Chandrayaan. It also underscored the government’s emphasis on “Women-Led Development”, citing initiatives ranging from smoke-free kitchens and the Lakhpati Didi campaign to the enactment of 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies.
The Cabinet further described farmers as a key pillar of the vision for a “Viksit Bharat” and credited programmes such as PM Kisan Samman Nidhi and the extension of Kisan Credit Cards to pastoralists and fishermen with boosting the agricultural sector. It noted that India’s agricultural exports had crossed the Rs 5 lakh crore mark.
The resolution praised what it termed a “Nation First” approach in implementing long-pending reforms and listed measures including the abrogation of Article 370, implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), One Rank One Pension (OROP), the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and labour code reforms.
On national security, the Cabinet said the government had adopted a firm stance against terrorism, citing surgical strikes, cross-border air strikes, Operation Sindoor and the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. It also referred to progress in tackling Naxalism, signing permanent peace accords in the North-East and resolving the border dispute with Bangladesh.
The resolution credited the “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives with strengthening India’s manufacturing sector across fields ranging from defence production to artificial intelligence. It also highlighted India’s growing international profile through its G20 presidency, International Yoga Day, the International Solar Alliance and Mission LiFE.
According to the Cabinet, the government’s efforts to advance development while preserving heritage — described as “Vikas” and “Virasat” — were reflected in projects such as the new Parliament building and Kartavya Path. It added that public participation had helped the country navigate global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Cabinet stated that political stability, dynamic governance and long-term policy planning over the past 12 years had transformed India into the world’s fastest-growing large economy.
As part of the resolution, the Cabinet formally congratulated the Prime Minister on the achievement, expressed gratitude for work undertaken under his leadership for the welfare of the poor and empowerment of marginalised communities, appreciated policies that, according to the resolution, enabled more than 25 crore people to overcome poverty, acknowledged his dedication and sustained efforts in public service, praised initiatives aimed at inclusive growth and social justice, commended his leadership in strengthening national security and safeguarding India’s interests, and reaffirmed support for his vision of building a “Viksit Bharat”.
The resolution concluded with wishes for the Prime Minister’s good health and long life and expressed confidence that, under his leadership, India would continue progressing towards becoming a self-reliant, secure, prosperous and developed nation by 2047.
