ICMR has released an Expression of Interests (EOI) for a project to facilitate implementation research on how to effectively prevent and/or screen for oral, breast, cervical, and gastrointestinal cancers in Jammu and Kashmir.
This release marks a major evolution in the healthcare landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
ICMR’s intent to conduct larger scale implementation research focused on the prevention and/or screening of oral, breast, cervical, and gastrointestinal cancers will provide a direct response to the existing epidemiological challenges (Gastrointestinal cancer particularly affects the local population at a higher rate).
By bringing early screening of cancers to public healthcare in this way, authorities are helping to shift the medical narrative from a model of reactive treatment to a model of proactive care.
This initiative will also provide local researchers and medical institutions with an opportunity to develop culturally-sensitive screening protocols that take into account the unique topographic and logistical issues of the Union Territory.
Through early discovery of cancers, this project will help to reduce the incidence of death due to cancer, as well as reduce the financial and emotional burden that cancer causes for families.
Additionally, through capacity building—by providing education and training to local frontline healthcare workers and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs)—the project will assist in establishing a successful foundation for community engagement.
Ultimately, this ICMR initiative reflects a strong commitment by the government towards addressing public health issues.
It not only offers assistance to people suffering from poverty but also establishes an integrated approach based on sound research.
The Government of Jammu & Kashmir, through its efforts to provide research-based health services, community education and support, and timely access to health care, has created a model which can lead to a healthier and stronger future for all.
