Jammu, June 04: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has reconstituted the Tree Authorities for the Jammu and Srinagar Municipal Corporations under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act, 2000.
According to a government order, the Commissioner of the respective Municipal Corporation will serve as the Chairman of the authority. Senior officials from the Municipal Corporation, Urban Forestry and Horticulture departments have been included as members.
The reconstituted authorities have been entrusted with the responsibility of protecting and preserving trees within their respective jurisdictions. They will also collect information on existing trees from landowners and occupants, formulate guidelines regarding the number and species of trees to be maintained in different localities, and promote urban afforestation initiatives.
In addition, the authorities will assist government agencies, educational institutions and private organizations in plantation and conservation activities, besides implementing measures aimed at safeguarding and expanding urban green cover. (KINS)
