Planning strategy

The daily hubbub of Srinagar’s active streets, with its colourful market life, culture-based living activities, and people’s daily commutes, has historically been accentuated by an extremely loud refrain of traffic congestion.

Solutions to the complex issue of traffic congested streets require not only determination to solve it but, more importantly, the ability to formulate a cohesive strategy for its resolution, the authorities must be appreciated for the optimistic approach who has publicly stated his commitment to developing a specific ‘planned strategy’ to relieve vehicles’ congestion on the roads and to directly address the high volume of ‘bottlenecks’ encountered.

Being a first step in transitioning from an “as-needed” to an “as-required” basis of traffic management, the announcement felt more optimistic than pessimistic due to how emphatically it supports building a framework around returning quality of life enhancements, economic health, and environmental health to the residents of Srinagar.

The fact that the strategy has been explicitly labelled as one of the key focus areas shows that the Traffic Police have been receptive to listening to the residents of Srinagar and responding to their needs, and therefore expect traffic-related problems to be one of the first items to be updated on the city’s quality of life improvement platform as part of the intervention created under this agreement.

It also demonstrates that the understanding of the Traffic Police is that solving problems associated with traffic will improve the city’s overall quality of life, economic viability, and environmental viability.

The commitment to focusing on a ‘planned strategy’ offers the promise that the Traffic Police’s forthcoming solutions will be based on legitimate analysis of traffic evidence, development of engineering solutions, and strategically deploying the number of personnel in a manner that will allow for maximised utilization of each officer’s time.

A systematic design addressing all of these components leads to long-term solutions and avoids temporary fixes.

This strategy does not operate in a vacuum; traffic management is an industry-wide collaborative effort.

The collaboration of all stakeholders will create holistic improvement in the infrastructure related to roadways, parking, and public transport integration.

The human component of our Traffic Police also deserves to be highlighted. The consistent elegance of our Traffic Police during all seasons demonstrates their commitment.

A coordinated citywide strategy will further empower our Traffic Police by giving them a uniform direction, and therein, they will have specific targets to accomplish to be more effective in their job and connectivity with the public.

As with all traffic management plans, the success of this citywide strategy will depend on the cooperation of the citizens of Srinagar. We implore Srinagar residents to view this initiative as a citizen’s duty, not just as an initiative taken by the Department of Traffic.

If citizens follow the lane discipline, respect pedestrian rights, and collectively take the initiative to carpool and utilize public transport where possible, the results of the police’s strategic initiatives will become exponentially more positive.
