A fruitful new track

In a positive turn that will help revive a beleaguered sector, the Indian Railways has announced that it will run two dedicated parcel trains to transport fresh fruits from the Kashmir Valley to Jammu and Delhi.

This new development is not just a logistical move but also vital to the horticulture sector—out of which the region’s economy has been formed and has the potential to collapse.

Whether the floods, mudslides, or work stoppages due to the ongoing political turmoil, the legendary National Highway 44 that connects Kashmir to the rest of India, has been cut for days at a time over the last 4-6 weeks.

Heavy rains, with accompanying floods have made it impossible to move heavy trucks on the highway. All of this while tons of fresh ready to sell produce is stranded, as a multitude of trucks sit idle, unable to get to the fresh fruit markets where everyone’s hopes rely on selling the valley’s farm produce such as crisp apples, sweet cherries, and delicious pears.

Each passing day has raised everyone’s anxiety in the valley, including the farmers themselves, who have seen their investments die on the roadside a few miles from their orchard without getting to the very people who wanted to buy their fresh, high quality expensive produce from Kashmir.

This is a time of anxiety and uncertainty, but the Railways plan stands out as a practical way of looking to turn this into an opportunity. Two new parcel vans should provide farmers a new reliable and effective alternative to transport the fruits that is not subject to the vagaries of the weather.

There are numerous advantages to this shift. It immediately protects the livelihood of thousands of orchard and horticulture supply chain workers and helps ensure their efforts do bear fruit in the retail market, reducing waste and stabilising their income.

It will also help stabilise prices in consuming markets like Delhi that have likely suffered shortages and price surges due to disrupted supply.

Additionally, it signals the importance of a diversified and resilient logistics ecosystem. It enunciates how the logistical strength and geographical reach of the Indian Railways can transform agricultural supply chains and, regional economies.

As these initial parcel vans depart, they are carrying more than just pre-packaged crates of fruit, they are carrying the ambitions of an entire sector, and the promise of commercial stability yet reinforces a spirit of resilience.
