Progressing medical health care complex

The announcement that All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Awantipora will start its MBBS courses in July of 2026, and that OPD and IPD services will be operating by the end of that year, marks a historic shift in the medical health care complex in Jammu and Kashmir.

The acknowledgement of the Executive Director of AIIMS before a Legislative Assembly Committee, reflects the governments strategic health care policy and planning for medical education in Jammu and Kashmir.

AIIMS Awantipora will provide world-class medical education, addressing the long-standing request for more MBBS seats in the region.

The students in Jammu and Kashmir will no longer have to leave their home state to get a quality experience, as will be a feature of the best medical college of its kind in India.

By the end of the year 2026, the commencement of OPD and IPD services will also assist in alleviating some of the great burden on the existing health care system in the Valley.

For example, patients that previously had to travel to Srinagar, Delhi, or all the way to the western theatre of India for something like specialized treatment will now be able to access high-level medical care closer to home.

Not only will this save lives, but it will also help relieve not only the emotional, but the financial burden of families that are seeking the medical services they require.

The institution will create many direct and indirect job opportunities, by way of medical, administrative staff, support service personnel, and thousands of additional opportunities that will enhance the region’s economy.

In addition to healthcare and education, AIIMS Awantipora will support local jobs and provide a stimulus to the local economy.

The academically sound and well-crafted curriculum will be supported by experienced faculty members and world-class facilities to train the next generation of healthcare providers to contribute, both directly and indirectly, to the economic development of the region.
