Shopian: A group of around 200 youth in Keegam area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district have been installing dustbins at main places and cleaning water bodies to keep the environment clean.
This group under the banner of Keegam Youth Trust was recently praised by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for their environment friendly steps.
Youth around 200 in number who are part of this trust have been working for environmental sustainability and have been installing dustbins at various strategic points throughout the town.
President of the Trust, Basharat Maqbool said that the main aim behind this work is to combat littering and promote a cleaner and greener environment in the area that will be extended to other areas as well.
He said that they have purchased small dustbins on their own and distributed them among hundreds of households and created awareness among them about the importance of proper waste disposal and environmental stewardship.
Maqbool said that they have installed big dustbins at main points in the area and the waste thrown in it will be collected and properly treated at the facilities available.
By providing accessible waste disposal options, we are hopeful that it will help in significant reduction in littering and encourage people to keep their area clean, he said, adding that they have provided biodegradable bags to the shopkeepers in the area by taking away polythene from them so as to promote polythene free culture.
He said that they have cleaned dozens of blocked water bodies in the area so as to keep water clean.
