Boosting farmers’ development

Jammu and Kashmir, with its diverse climatic zones and rich agricultural heritage, holds immense potential for farming. Recognizing the critical role of agriculture in the region’s economy, the Centre has taken several significant steps to promote the welfare and development of farmers in the Union Territory.
These initiatives reflect a concerted effort to uplift the farming community and ensure sustainable agricultural growth.
One of the most notable recent developments was the recent visit of Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, to the India International Kashmir Saffron Trade Centre in Pampore.
During his visit the Minister underscored the Centre’s commitment to promoting the saffron industry, a hallmark of Kashmir’s agricultural identity.
During the interactive session with Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and saffron farmers, he (the Minister) highlighted the government’s proactive approach to address the concerns and aspirations of the farming community.
During the visit, Minister Prasada assured the farmers of all possible support from the Centre, reiterating the government’s dedication to uplifting farmers across Jammu and Kashmir.
The focus on saffron, a premium cash crop, is particularly significant. Saffron cultivation, which has been a traditional occupation for many families in the region, has faced challenges due to changing weather patterns, market fluctuations, and lack of modern farming techniques. By promoting saffron farming and providing the necessary infrastructure and support, the Centre aims to revive this sector and enhance the livelihoods of saffron farmers.
Beyond the saffron industry, the Centre has initiated several other measures to support the broader agricultural community in Jammu and Kashmir. The introduction of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme has provided direct financial assistance to farmers, ensuring a stable income and reducing the economic burden on small and marginal farmers. This initiative has been a lifeline for many farmers, helping them invest in better seeds, fertilizers, and farming equipment.
Additionally, the Centre has focused on enhancing irrigation facilities and water management systems. Projects like the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) aim to provide assured irrigation to farmers, thereby improving crop productivity and ensuring food security.
The emphasis on creating water-efficient practices and promoting micro-irrigation techniques is crucial in a region where water scarcity can significantly impact agricultural output.
The establishment of FPOs has also been a game-changer for farmers in J&K. These organizations empower farmers by providing a platform for collective bargaining, access to quality inputs, and better market linkages. By strengthening FPOs, the Centre is fostering an environment where farmers can achieve economies of scale and enhance their income.
