Srinagar: In a resounding achievement for Srinagar, the district has secured an impressive fourth position in the prestigious Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan – 2023 (Clean Air Survey) conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board, Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MEFCC) under its flagship initiative, the National Clean Air Programme.
This remarkable feat underscores the city’s commitment to maintaining pristine air quality and fostering a healthier environment for its residents.
The Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan – 2023 survey evaluated various cities across India on key air quality parameters, including air pollutant levels, adherence to emission standards, and implementation of measures to mitigate air pollution. Srinagar’s exceptional performance, securing the fourth spot, highlights the concerted efforts and innovative strategies adopted by the district administration to combat air pollution.
An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Srinagar’s success can be attributed to a multi-pronged approach that encompasses strict regulatory measures, community engagement, and the integration of technology.”
He said, “The authorities collaborated closely with industries and stakeholders to enforce emission norms and reduce pollution levels. Additionally, the district administration undertook initiatives to promote the use of cleaner fuels and encourage sustainable modes of transportation, contributing significantly to the improved air quality index.”
Notably, Srinagar’s unique geographic location, nestled in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, posed both challenges and opportunities. “The authorities leveraged this distinct topography to implement targeted solutions that took advantage of natural wind patterns and dispersion mechanisms, further enhancing the city’s air quality,” the official added.
“Public awareness campaigns were conducted to empower citizens with knowledge about the adverse effects of air pollution and the ways they could contribute to cleaner air. This grassroots involvement not only led to increased compliance with anti-pollution measures but also fostered a sense of ownership among the people for their city’s environment,” he said.
Srinagar’s success also shines a spotlight on the effectiveness of the National Clean Air Programme, an ambitious initiative launched by the MEFCC to tackle the burgeoning issue of air pollution in the cities. The programme’s comprehensive approach, combining policy formulation, technological innovation, and community engagement, has proven instrumental in driving positive change in urban air quality.
