Srinagar, Oct 07: Police arrested 10 alleged drug peddlers in separate operations across Anantnag and Shopian on Tuesday, recovering charas, ganja, a heroin-like substance and cash, as intensified naka checking and surveillance continued across the two districts.
In Anantnag, seven persons were arrested in five separate actions, with police recovering 2.5 kg of charas powder in one case, along with smaller quantities of charas, ganja and dried bhang bhoosa in the other cases.
A police party from Police Station Anantnag intercepted Imtiyaz Ahmed Lone of Seepan at Nandpora and recovered 2.5 kg of charas powder from his possession.
At Nowshera Crossing near Gujjar Hostel, a police team from Police Station Srigufwara arrested Riyaz Ahmad Hajam of Sirhama and recovered 3.52 grams of charas and 368 grams of ganja.
In another operation, Police Station Pahalgam personnel intercepted a Scorpio vehicle at Movera and arrested Fareed Ahmad Chohan and Fayaz Ahmad Doie, both residents of Kharpora Movera. About 90 grams of dried bhang bhoosa and 5 grams of charas were recovered, police said. The vehicle was also seized.
Police Post Janglat Mandi personnel arrested Junaid Ahmad Sheikh of Sherpora at Donipawa and recovered 5 grams of charas.
At Batengoo Crossing, Police Post Khanabal arrested Zubair Ahmad Dar and Shahid Gulzar, both residents of Batengoo, and recovered approximately 350 grams of ganja.
Separately, in Shopian, Police Station Zainapora personnel arrested Feroz Ahmad Mir of Litter, Pulwama, during naka checking at Aglar.
Police said 1.95 grams of a heroin-like substance and ₹12,050 in cash were recovered from his possession.
A case under relevant provisions of law has been registered at Police Station Zainapora, while investigation is underway to establish the source of the substance and its forward and backward linkages.
Cases have also been registered in the Anantnag cases and further investigation initiated, police said.
The arrests come as police intensify surveillance and naka checking to disrupt the supply and distribution of narcotics in south Kashmir. Police urged the public to share information about drug peddling, illegal cultivation of narcotic plants and substance abuse, assuring that the identity of informants would be kept confidential.
