NIMAS team scripts record

New Delhi, Sept 25: A 20-member team of mountaineers from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, has created a record by summiting 20 previously unclimbed peaks above 6,000 metres in Ladakh in just 23 days.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday flagged in the expedition team in New Delhi after the climbers completed what the Defence Ministry described as the first recorded summits of 20 unclimbed peaks in the Chamser-Lungser, Gyama Nala and Chokula areas of the Ladakh Range.

The expedition was led by Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal and was undertaken to promote adventure and exploration in the high-altitude frontier regions.

Interacting with the team, Singh commended the climbers for their endurance, technical expertise, planning and teamwork, describing the achievement as a demonstration of India’s mountaineering capabilities.

He said the successful ascents had set new benchmarks in high-altitude mountaineering and would encourage young mountaineers to take up adventure and exploration.

The expedition involved climbing 20 peaks that had not previously been recorded as summited, making the scale and pace of the achievement its key distinction.

The Defence Ministry said the expedition also sought to strengthen India’s presence on the global mountaineering map and inspire future generations to explore high-altitude terrain.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and senior officials of the Ministry of Defence were present at the flag-in ceremony at Kartavya Bhavan-2.
