SKIMS MedLab Nexus 2026: Learning, Discovery & Inspiration

As a student of Clinical Biochemistry, I believe that education becomes more meaningful when classroom learning is connected with real-world experiences. Text books introduce us to scientific concepts, but academic events provide opportunities to understand their practical applications. With this thought, I attended SKIMS MedLab Nexus 2026, organized by the College of Allied & Healthcare Sciences, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, on 11th and 12th September 2026. I was accompanied by four of my classmates from my college, making the experience even more memorable. The program held under the theme “Biomedical Laboratories: Advancement in Health Care,”. The event brought together students, research scholars, healthcare professionals and laboratory experts at one place. It provided a platform for academic discussions, scientific presentations, practical training and cultural activities. For me, attending MedLabNexus was an opportunity to explore the field of biomedical sciences beyond the boundaries of our regular curriculum. I am sharing few of my leaning experience through this exceptionally well organized program.
Understanding the Importance of Biomedical Laboratories.
Biomedical laboratories are an essential part of modern healthcare. They support the diagnosis of diseases, monitoring of treatment and advancement of medical research. Behind many medical decisions lies the work of laboratory professionals who examine samples, interpret findings and maintain the accuracy of diagnostic investigations. As a student of Clinical Biochemistry, I found the central theme of MedLab Nexus relevant to our curriculum. Our subject connects the study of biochemical processes with the diagnosis and understanding of diseases. The event helped me to appreciate how laboratory sciences contribute to healthcare and why accuracy, quality control and technological advancement are so important.
Academic Sessions and Research Presentations
The academic sessions were among the most valuable aspects of the event. The first day included a lecture by Dr. Arshad Pandith, Additional Professor, ACHG, SKIMS, on “Genetic Landscaping—Unravelling Disease and Research Voyage.” The topic highlighted the relationship between genetics, disease and research, encouraging participants to think about the role of scientific investigation in understanding complex health conditions. Another important presentation delivered by Research Scholar Mr. Manzoor Raina on “Quality Assurance in Diagnostic Laboratories.” The session emphasized the importance of maintaining accuracy and reliability in laboratory investigations. It helped me & other students to understand that even a small error in a diagnostic process can affect the interpretation of results, making quality assurance an essential responsibility. Dr. Syed Sajad Hussain, Principal Scientist at IIIM, Srinagar, delivered a presentation on “Development of Phytopharmaceuticals for the Management of Sickle Cell Anaemia.” The topic reflected the significance of research in exploring potential healthcare solutions and demonstrated how scientific knowledge can contribute to addressing serious medical conditions. A session on the benefits of automation in biochemistry also drew attention to the growing role of technology in laboratory practice. Automation can improve efficiency and support the standardization of diagnostic procedures, making it an important area of interest for students preparing for careers in clinical laboratories.
Exploring New Areas of Knowledge
The second day of SKIMS MedLab Nexus continued with informative sessions on errors in clinical laboratories, quality control systems and digital transformation in biomedical laboratories. These discussions provided insight into the challenges faced by modern diagnostic services and the importance of continuous improvement. One of the presentations focused on how medical laboratories transform healthcare. This topic helped to connect the technical aspects of laboratory investigations with their practical significance for patients. It reminded me that laboratory science is not an isolated discipline but an important part of the larger healthcare system. The event also included a lecture on preparedness from laboratories to clinics. Such discussions encouraged participants to consider how laboratory professionals contribute to healthcare beyond routine testing and how collaboration between different medical disciplines can improve patient services.
Learning Together with Classmates
Attending SKIMS MedLab Nexus with four of my classmates from college made the experience more enjoyable. Sharing an academic event with fellow students gave us an opportunity to discuss the presentations, exchange ideas and reflect on the topics we found interesting. We could relate many of the discussions to what we study in our Clinical Biochemistry classes. This made the learning process more engaging and helped us understand the relevance of our academic subjects. The experience also reminded me of the value of learning together. Students may have different interests and perspectives, and discussing scientific topics with classmates can encourage curiosity and improve understanding. Academic events therefore provide not only knowledge but also opportunities to develop communication and teamwork.
BCLS Training and Practical Exposure
Another important component of SKIMS MedLab Nexus was Basic Life Support training to us. The program included two training batches at the Skill Development Centre, SKIMS. The workshop offered participants an opportunity to gain practical knowledge related to basic life support and emergency healthcare. For students of allied health sciences, such training is valuable because it introduces skills that are relevant to the broader healthcare environment. It also highlights the importance of preparedness and responsibility when responding to emergency situations. Although Clinical Biochemistry primarily focuses on laboratory investigations, exposure to other healthcare skills helps students to develop a more complete understanding of the medical profession.
A Combination of Science and Creativity
SKIMS MedLab Nexus was not limited to academic lectures and training sessions. The event also included technical and cultural competitions such as poster presentation, oral presentation, quiz, poetry, painting and calligraphy. These activities provided students with opportunities to demonstrate creativity, express ideas and develop confidence. Scientific knowledge is important, but the ability to communicate that knowledge effectively is equally valuable. Poster presentations and oral presentations, in particular, encourage students to explain complex ideas in a clear and understandable manner. The inclusion of cultural activities also created a welcoming atmosphere and allowed students to participate in an environment that celebrated both knowledge and creativity.
Reflections on My Experience
My experience at SKIMS MedLab Nexus 2026 was enriching and educational. The event gave me an opportunity to listen to experts, learn about current developments in biomedical sciences and understand the importance of research in healthcare. It also encouraged me to think more deeply about my own academic journey. As a student of Clinical Biochemistry, I am beginning to explore the different possibilities within this field, including laboratory practice, research and further education. Events like SKIMS MedLab Nexus help students gain a clearer perspective on these opportunities. The experience reminded me that scientific progress requires curiosity, dedication and a willingness to keep learning. It also showed me that professional growth begins with small opportunities to observe, ask questions and develop an interest in new areas.

SKIMS MedLabNexus 2026 was a valuable academic experience that brought together scientific learning, practical training, research and creativity. The event highlighted the important role of biomedical laboratories in modern healthcare and provided students with an opportunity to understand the developments shaping the field. Attending the event with my four classmates made the experience even more memorable. We were able to learn together, exchange ideas and appreciate the importance of our chosen discipline. For me, SKIMS MedLabNexus was more than a conference. It was an opportunity to broaden my knowledge, gain inspiration and develop a deeper interest in biomedical sciences. The event’s theme, “Biomedical Laboratories: Advancement in Health Care,” reflects the importance of connecting scientific progress with human well-being. As students, we have a responsibility to continue learning and exploring the possibilities within our fields. SKIMS MedLabNexus 2026 encouraged me to do exactly that, reminding me that every step towards knowledge can contribute to a better understanding of science and its role in improving healthcare.
