The recent high-level review of the Jammu & Kashmir Infrastructure and Connectivity Development Programme, which includes a massive portfolio of National Highways, tunnels, flyovers and ring roads, is a definite step forward for the Union Territory. The government’s overall commitment to the region is coming out as an important theme in addressing the transformational needs of this sensitive area.
This huge project has the potential to be truly transformative for the people of the region. The current portfolio of 44 projects, worth more than Rs 39,711 crore, being implemented by agencies like the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), NHAI, NHIDCL and the Public Works (R&B) Department also has a feel of scale about it.
The work on the big-ticket Srinagar Ring Road is on track to meet the new deadlines and provide much-needed connectivity to the border areas.
The focus on roads that can carry traffic through all weathers is also praiseworthy.
The major projects provide a leap forward in terms of connecting this backward region with all-weather roads. Added to this is the commitment to not disrupt the road traffic by completing the works on other roads during the construction period.
This has the potential to truly enhance the quality of life for thousands of people as they get connected to premier highways and tunnels which have been identified as critical for the region.

By being ahead of the curve in taking up such projects and addressing bottlenecks, the government is helping in completing the projects well within time, heralding faster movement of goods and people and opening up new vistas of growth and development.
