In a welcome turn of events for the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the Northern Regional Power Committee (NRPC) has determined that the area is likely to possess surplus power for the month of September 2026 .
This development forecasts a new beginning for the people and businesses in the region who have experienced long-standing power shortages.
The NRPC analysis revealed that there are likely to be a whopping 23 percent surplus energy in general and 13.8 percent surplus during peak solar hours .
The information was shared by the State Load Despatch Center (SLDC) and it shows that power availability in the region is set to outweigh demand for almost all blocks of time.
The NRPC has also noted that any shortages that may arise, particularly during off-solar hours, can be easily met by the short-term market to ensure there are no disruptions to power supply.
The forecast is particularly heartening considering that just a single month ago, in August 2026, the region was expected to experience power deficits of 13.9 percent during peak hours.
This means that the power availability is set to improve by more than double in just one month.
It is also worth noting that during the same period last year, the region was expected to experience just a slight power deficit before recording a significant improvement that saw it transition to a surplus status from a deficit position.
The much-needed power surplus is bound to have huge implications for the people of Jammu & Kashmir, not to mention the businesses.
It is a sure indication that the power shortages in the region will soon be a thing of the past, thus boosting the quality of life for millions of people.
The forecast is also a reminder that Jammu & Kashmir is on its way to becoming a net electricity producer, ready to supply the mainland with surplus power.
