The economic scenario in the rural hinterland of Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing an upbeat.
As per the data provided by the Ministry of Rural Development in the Lok Sabha, in the 2025-26 fiscal year, Jammu and Kashmir registered 444.41 lakh person-days of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
This shows that the government is sincere in its efforts to safeguard the interests of the people of J&K and also to develop the rural economy of the state.
The efforts made in the last fiscal year have been continued in the current fiscal year as well.
In the 2026-27 fiscal year till now, Jammu and Kashmir have been able to generate 49.98 lakh person-days of employment by providing wage employment under MGNREGS and VB-G RAM G scheme.
This shows that the government is committed to the cause of rural development and poverty alleviation in the UT.
The high number of person-days also shows that many people have been able to get regular wages which has helped them improve their living standards.
The effective implementation of rural employment schemes showcases not only the government’s reach but also the control it has over the remotest parts of the UT.
It has helped provide a safety net to the rural poor by giving them guaranteed wage employment.
The schemes have discouraged migration from rural to urban areas to a large extent and have given a fillip to the local economy as various assets have been created by employing the rural workforce.
Linking the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme with the VB-G RAM G is an innovative step in this direction.
It is indeed a judicious allocation of resources to meet the needs of rural development and accelerate the rate of economic growth in the UT.
Jammu and Kashmir is emerging as a model UT in implementing various schemes aimed at rural development and employment generation.
It has been able to provide employment to people in both the organized and unorganized sectors which in turn has enhanced the economic security of a large population and brought prosperity to the UT.
