Both Houses adjourned for the day
New Delhi: Proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on Tuesday after repeated disruptions and sloganeering by Opposition members, bringing legislative business in Parliament to a standstill. Both Houses will reconvene at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Opposition continued its protests over the alleged police lathi-charge on students demonstrating against the NEET-UG paper leak, with members demanding a discussion on the issue and raising slogans throughout the day.
In the Lok Sabha, the House was adjourned three times as persistent protests prevented normal business. Speaker Om Birla first adjourned the House till noon after repeated disruptions.
Appealing to members to allow proceedings to continue, Birla said, “Do you not want the House to run?… Everyone will get a chance to raise their issues.”
When the House reassembled at noon, Presiding Officer Sandhya Ray repeatedly urged Opposition members to maintain order, but sloganeering continued, forcing another adjournment.
Later, with Dilip Saikia in the Chair, repeated appeals to members to return to their seats and allow proceedings under Rule 377 went unheeded. As the uproar persisted, the House was adjourned for the day.
The Rajya Sabha also witnessed similar scenes. The House was first adjourned shortly after assembling in the morning, then again till 2 p.m. after reconvening at noon due to continued protests.
When the Upper House met after 2 p.m., the disruptions continued, prompting Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singh to adjourn proceedings for the day.
Harivansh repeatedly appealed to members to maintain decorum and adhere to the listed business, stressing that unlisted issues could not be taken up. “I have been repeatedly urging members to maintain order in the House,” he said, adding that it appeared the Opposition was not interested in allowing the House to function under parliamentary rules.
The Opposition’s protests stem from the alleged police action against students and activists who marched towards Parliament on Monday demanding justice in the NEET-UG paper leak case.
The disruptions follow similar scenes on the opening day of the Monsoon Session, when repeated adjournments affected proceedings in both Houses. With legislative business stalled, the government and the Opposition remain locked in confrontation over the issue.
