Amit Shah reviews roadmap, seeks early report
New Delhi, July 1: The Centre’s High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes will begin visits to States and Union Territories to gather first-hand inputs on demographic changes and consult Central ministries as part of its nationwide assessment, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was informed on Wednesday.
During a meeting with Shah in New Delhi, the committee outlined its roadmap, saying it would interact with State governments, Union Territory administrations and various Central ministries to obtain ground-level feedback on issues related to demographic changes before finalising its recommendations.
The committee also informed the Home Minister that it has prepared a detailed questionnaire to be shared with States and Union Territories in advance to facilitate focused and meaningful discussions during its visits.
According to an official statement, Shah appreciated the committee’s strategy and directed the Union Home Secretary to provide all possible assistance to the panel in its day-to-day functioning as well as during its field visits. He also asked the committee to submit its recommendations at the earliest.
The High-Level Committee was constituted by the Government of India to study demographic changes arising from illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons and recommend policy, legislative and administrative measures to address them. The move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a “High-powered Demography Mission” during his Independence Day address on August 15, 2025.
The committee is mandated to scientifically assess demographic changes occurring in different parts of the country, analyse their causes and suggest appropriate measures to deal with their impact.
Retired Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar heads the committee. Its members include the Census Commissioner, retired IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, retired IPS officer Balaji Srivastava and Dr. Shamika Ravi, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.
