2 die of electrocution in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 22: Two persons, including an elderly woman, died in separate electrocution incidents in Srinagar on Monday, with one of the deaths occurring amid waterlogging caused by rainfall in old city.

Officials said a 35-year-old man, identified as Asif Ahmad Mir, son of Fayaz Ahmad Mir of Rainawari, sustained an electric shock at his residence and was rushed to SMHS Hospital Srinagar in a critical condition. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Family members told authorities that the electrocution occurred inside the victim’s home. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are being ascertained.

In a separate incident, a 65-year-old woman, identified as Shameema, wife of late Ghulam Nabi Makdhoomi of Shamspora, died after allegedly coming into contact with an electric pole in the Naidkadal area of Srinagar’s old city.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred near Rangar Masjid when the woman came into contact with the pole amid waterlogged conditions following rainfall.

The woman reportedly collapsed on the spot after receiving the electric shock and was immediately shifted to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police have taken cognisance of both incidents and initiated necessary legal proceedings. The bodies were handed over to the families after completion of medico-legal formalities.
