Census-2027: 1.5 lakh complete self-enumeration in J&K

Strong response within first three days: Sharma

JAMMU, May 19: More than 1.50 lakh households across Jammu and Kashmir have completed self-enumeration within the first three days of the launch of Census 2027’s digital self-enumeration exercise, Chief Principal Census Officer (CPCO) Amit Sharma said today

Addressing a press conference here, Sharma said the response to the online exercise through the official portal — se.census.gov.in — has been “highly encouraging”, with participation reported from urban, rural, hilly and far-flung areas of the Union Territory.

He said districts including Kulgam, Baramulla and Kupwara, besides remote areas of Jammu division, have witnessed significant public participation during the initial phase of the exercise, reflecting growing awareness and confidence among citizens regarding the digital Census process.

Sharma, who was accompanied by PIB Media and Communications Officer Zakir Nazeer, attributed the strong response to extensive awareness campaigns, media outreach, district-level mobilisation and citizen facilitation mechanisms put in place by the Directorate of Census Operations and district administrations.

He said dedicated support systems and facilitation arrangements have also been established at district and field levels to help citizens complete the self-enumeration process accurately through the online platform.

The CPCO said special operational mechanisms are being devised to ensure coverage of migratory and nomadic tribal populations, including Gujjars and Bakarwals, during the Census exercise.

“No person from the tribal or migratory population will be left out of the Census enumeration exercise,” Sharma said, adding that coordination is underway with departments including Forests, School Education, Tribal Affairs and Sheep Husbandry for comprehensive coverage of migratory populations.

He said special deployment plans for enumerators and supervisors are also being prepared for remote and hilly migratory routes to ensure coverage of households residing in difficult geographical locations.

Sharma further said the self-enumeration portal and Census mobile applications have been designed to function effectively even in low-connectivity areas through offline and synchronisation-based mechanisms.

Appealing to residents to complete the exercise within the notified timelines, Sharma said accurate demographic data was essential for governance, welfare schemes, infrastructure planning and policy formulation.

He also clarified that all information collected during Census operations remains confidential under the Census Act, 1948, and said no bank account details, PAN information or financial transaction data are being collected during the exercise.
