A cleaner tomorrow

The Jammu and Kashmir Council of Ministers approved the establishment of Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Project with 800 Tons Per Day (TPD) Project at Achan (Srinagar) recently. This is a major step forward for environmental/urban development in this region.

This project is expected to greatly reduce the serious long-term public health risk to the community from the long period of wasted municipal solid waste (MSW) that has been uncollected in large quantities with an overwhelming presence of odorous waste and flies.

It will greatly contribute to addressing the rapidly growing waste-related problem created by the tremendous growth associated with the urbanization of Srinagar and it will continue to support the viability and attractiveness as a tourist destination of Srinagar as a city.

This project has far-reaching impacts that go beyond just cleaning; it will create sustainable community development based on a comprehensive system.

Ultimately, this programme aims to enhance (through better civic infrastructure) the overall health/development of the community through these programs, and by facilitating compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules to be implemented by 2026.

The implementation of the ambitious “people first” policy represents strong political will and leadership to change the city of Srinagar and create better quality of life opportunities for future generations. Additionally, this initiative will help provide opportunities to set an example for other regions to follow with best practices in integrated and sustainable solid waste management.

In addition to making a strong financial investment in the future of Srinagar approximately 361 crores, the government of Kashmir has made a strong commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens through this initiative.

Through the implementation of the 800 metric tons per day (TPD) Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) programme, a cleaner, greener Kashmir has been launched!
