Srinagar, May 11: The Ladakh Administration has constituted a high-level committee to oversee and recommend measures for the smooth functioning and operationalisation of the five newly created districts in the Union Territory.
The move comes after Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved the creation and notification of five new districts — Changthang, Nubra, Sham, Zanskar and Drass — in April this year, fulfilling a long-pending public demand aimed at improving governance and administrative accessibility in remote regions.
An official spokesperson said the newly formed UT-level committee would examine all administrative, financial and logistical matters related to the establishment of the districts and recommend a framework for their effective functioning.
The committee has been tasked with planning the establishment of key district-level offices and restructuring administrative jurisdictions, including subdivisions, tehsils, niabats, girdawar and qanungo circles, as well as patwar halqas, in line with the territorial boundaries of the new districts.
According to the administration, the initiative is intended to decentralise governance and strengthen public service delivery in far-flung and underserved areas of Ladakh.
“The creation of the new districts is aimed at decentralising governance and ensuring that administrative services reach the doorsteps of the people, particularly those living in remote and far-flung areas,” the spokesperson said.
The administration stated that the operationalisation process would be carried out in a transparent and time-bound manner to ensure a smooth transition and effective implementation of the new administrative setup.
The Lieutenant Governor said the Union Territory administration was committed to building a responsive and people-centric governance system in Ladakh.
The committee has also been directed to recommend the distribution and redeployment of government staff, records, assets, infrastructure and other resources between the existing and newly created districts.
In addition, it will assess the requirement for creation, redeployment and upgradation of posts in revenue, development and other administrative departments necessary for the effective functioning of the districts.
The committee will be headed by the Divisional Commissioner and Secretary, Revenue Department, while the Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department, will serve as Member-Convenor. The Secretary of the General Administration Department and the Deputy Commissioners of Leh and Kargil have also been included as members.
Officials said the creation of the new districts is expected to enhance administrative outreach, improve grievance redressal mechanisms, strengthen developmental planning and ensure quicker delivery of government services to people living in remote areas of Ladakh. (KINS)
