New Delhi, May 9: The Centre’s three flagship social security schemes — Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) — have completed 11 years, with the government stating that the schemes have together recorded more than 94 crore enrolments since their launch in 2015.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 9, 2015, the schemes aim to provide affordable life insurance, accident cover and pension support, particularly to economically weaker and unorganised sections of society.
According to official data released on Friday, cumulative enrolments under PMJJBY have crossed 27.43 crore, while PMSBY has recorded over 58.09 crore enrolments. The Atal Pension Yojana has enrolled more than 9.04 crore subscribers as of April 30, 2026.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the schemes were launched to provide low-cost insurance and pension benefits to the people.
She said PMJJBY has settled claims worth more than Rs 21,512 crore benefiting over 10.75 lakh families, while PMSBY has paid nearly Rs 3,667 crore against 1.84 lakh claims.
“As we mark the 11th anniversary of the Jan Suraksha schemes, heartfelt appreciation for all stakeholders, including field functionaries of banks and insurance companies, whose dedicated efforts have made these schemes a huge success,” Sitharaman said.
Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said digitisation and simplification of enrolment and claims processes have been key focus areas under the schemes.
He said the online Jan Suraksha Portal has enabled citizens to enrol without visiting banks or post offices, while digital claim processing has helped ensure faster settlements.
Under PMJJBY, subscribers aged between 18 and 50 years receive a life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh for an annual premium of Rs 436. The scheme has recorded 12.72 crore female enrolments and over 8.09 crore enrolments from Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana account holders.
PMSBY provides accidental death and disability cover of up to Rs 2 lakh for an annual premium of Rs 20 to subscribers aged 18 to 70 years. Official figures show that 27.45 crore women and 19.30 crore PMJDY account holders have enrolled under the scheme.
The Atal Pension Yojana, administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, offers guaranteed monthly pensions ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 after the age of 60 years to eligible subscribers in the unorganised sector. Officials said women account for nearly 49 per cent of total enrolments under APY.
