Clearing the air

As the season of spring blooms across the valleys of Kashmir, there’s also another kind of spring that has made its way into Kashmir; the thick, white, fuzzy pollen from Russian Poplar trees has descended onto the UT in huge quantities!

After weeks of being blown about in the air, this white powdery substance has also accumulated on the roadways (as well as accumulated on their homes and waterways) making life much more difficult for thousands of people who once called this paradise their home.

The amount of Russian Poplar pollen that blows into Kashmir during the spring is substantial enough to create public health concerns. People of all ages have experienced many different problems due to this.

There has been an increase in Emergency Room (ER) visits due to many conditions that are caused by a combination of the Russian Poplar trees and their pollen, such as nausea, vomiting, itchy eyes, coughing, difficulty breathing, asthma, and many more.

The truth is; Many people have expressed that we need to chop down ALL of the Russian Poplar trees regardless of their economic importance to our UT due to timber production.

There is a need to develop a plan of action that will help solve this problem at both the institutional level and at the individual level. The first step in solving this problem is for authorities to immediately expedite the phased elimination of female Russian Poplar trees from residential areas and replace them with suitable, non- allergy producing, tree species.

Furthermore, there is a need to establish a pollen monitoring network that would collect data that would allow residents to know world-wide, regionally, and daily, how many pollen counts there are so that they may know when and where to plan their daily outdoor activities.

Individually, people need to wear protective (face masks and glasses) whenever they are outside, particularly in the morning hours of each day, or when it is windy outside, since these are two times when the pollen counts are the highest.
