Army rescues tourists after chopper snag

CM lauds Army, admin coordination

Srinagar, May 08: A private helicopter carrying tourists developed a technical fault near Sunshine Peak in north Kashmir’s Gulmarg on Thursday, prompting the Indian Army to launch a helicopter-based rescue operation to evacuate stranded visitors, officials said.

The helicopter was unable to take off after developing a snag while flying towards Sunshine Peak, a popular sightseeing destination where private operators ferry tourists for recreational visits.

Following the incident, the Army swiftly deployed three helicopters to rescue the stranded tourists and safely airlifted them to Gulmarg, officials said. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Tourists and members associated with the private helicopter operation expressed gratitude to the Army and the civil administration for the timely rescue effort.

“The helicopter developed a technical fault while flying towards Sunshine Peak. The Army immediately activated three helicopters and evacuated everyone safely. It was remarkable support,” one of the tourists said.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appreciated the prompt and coordinated response of the Army and civil administration in ensuring the safety of the stranded tourists.

In a statement, the Chief Minister commended the swift coordination among all agencies involved in the rescue operation and said their efforts ensured the well-being of the tourists.

He also directed the administration to strengthen safety protocols for tourist activities in the region to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

“The government remains committed to safeguarding tourists and maintaining high standards of safety at all tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement said.
