Empowering citizens

As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for the historic Census-2027, this is a major step towards improved convenience and transparency. For the first time, the administration has introduced an initiative to allow households to enter their household details online from May 17 to May 31, 2026.

The self-enumeration period will precede the in-person house-listing process (June 1 to June 30, 2026). Households will be able to actively participate in helping shape the future of this Union Territory.

This move to a `Digital First` Census will help promote transformational change due to the many advantages afforded residents.

Residents will have the opportunity to take their time providing physical amenities, buildings and property data from their homes. This will help to reduce the errors caused by rapidly conducting face-to-face interviews.

J&K is embracing this e-Government initiative by utilizing a digital platform that supports e-Government, thus allowing for the more efficient, faster, and secure collection of census information.

The data collected will include critical housing-related infrastructure data and will be used as a basis for developing policy, creating plans for new developments, and determining how to allocate resources to such areas as health care, education, and electricity.

This is especially critical as this census will create a foundation for the future of the Union Territory, with special considerations given to the coverage of snow-bound areas.

Although enumerators will continue to check that data is recorded correctly by going to residences to confirm data, being able to pre-submit this information will allow for a smoother process for both the public and government.

This is an exciting achievement for Jammu & Kashmir. All citizens now have an opportunity to use this 15-day time frame to enroll their home(s) digitally and help build a completed picture of a more precise representation of ourselves.

We can all join together in this digital change and help make Census-2027 successful with all our citizens.
