Digital shield

The explosive growth of digital users in Jammu and Kashmir has made a remarkable increase in the occurrences of cybercrime being reported per day to law enforcement agencies, predominantly with regard to fraud and financial scams.

However, what many don’t see behind these statistics is the great amount of positive action taken in response to the increases. The Jammu and Kashmir Police Department and other agencies of the administration have worked to create an extensive public awareness program that will enable all residents of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to become responsible and engaged digital users.

Authorities’ message is simple: an informed public is the most effective means of protection against cybercrime.

Jammu and Kashmir Police realize that technical illiteracy is a prime target for many cybercriminals, so they have developed a ‘grassroots level’ educational program.

Through intense public awareness workshops being conducted by the police and their partners in cybercrime throughout the entire Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, in schools, colleges and ITIs.

Unlike many other presentations that provide education, these workshops are hands-on and provide a complete instructional class on how to protect oneself from phishing, how to keep identify secure and how to prevent being a victim of financial fraud.

There are many components that comprise this proactive initiative and one such component is National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal having been promoted through out various means.

This allows authorities to stop some monetary transactions and in some instances recover stolen funds when reported promptly.

The proactive strategy has proven effective with Jammu Cyber Police resolving over 100 complaints and saving victims millions in the first quarter of 2026.

A strong message emanating from government leaders is that cybersecurity is a joint responsibility.

The government has asked parents and guardians to work with youth and seniors who have been victimized because they lack knowledge of how to protect themselves online.

This major effort to create a digital defence as J&K transforms into a more digitised, empowered state is commendable.

In addition to fighting cybercrime, the government is fostering a resilient community through education programmes as well as law enforcement agencies.

The greater number of cases reported shows that more people are coming forward and breaking their silence on cyber bullying and financial fraud. People are trusting the police to keep their digital future safe.
