The latest announcement from the Centre confirms how intentionally developing Jammu and Kashmir for tourism and other development projects is transforming the state into a world-class destination. By reimagining Jammu & Kashmir as a year-round tourist location and separating economic opportunity for local community members from seasonal businesses, Government plans to create a robust year-round infrastructure at multiple key tourism attraction locations.
By establishing various tourism segments such as eco-tourism, adventure sports, homestays in various remote villages and winter sports, The Government will provide many opportunities to increase the distribution of tourists to various areas through various government initiatives and flagship schemes.
The decentralisation of tourism will also provide significant access to economic opportunity for rural towns and long-distance areas in Ladakh and ultimately get the benefits of peace to everyone.
It will also foster positive effects on residents’ quality of life. When the local youth see a steady flow of visitors to their area, they will develop a sense of belonging and pride in their area through the eyes of their visitors.
Emphasizing these three areas demonstrates a maturing understanding of what’s required to maintain this balance.
We don’t want to commercially develop the region through thoughtless means; rather, we want to develop a sustainable model for how we coexist with nature and progress.
With its priority placed on enhancing the region’s tourism infrastructure, the Centre is signalling clearly to the world that Jammu & Kashmir is ready to conduct business, attract visitors and build a sustainable future on prosperity rather than adversity.
For Jammu & Kashmir’s residents – this is more than better transportation or accommodation options. This means regaining their status as one of India’s premier tourist destinations; creating jobs for thousands of local residents who rely on tourism; and helping ensure their long-term growth as they navigate an increasingly competitive global economy with confidence.
