The establishment of the first-ever Postgraduate MD program in Radiation Oncology at the Government Medical College Jammu is not just the beginning of a new academic journey for us but is also an essential step towards the fight against cancer in our community.
This month marks a major milestone in our common journey toward becoming self-sufficient in the area of cancer care.
Historically, the diagnosis of cancer has been a double burden for many families in Jammu and neighbouring areas; the emotional and physical toll it takes on a patient and their loved ones is compounded by having to travel out of state (India) to receive the treatment they require.
The financial hardship endured, separation from family, and fatigue from travelling to receive treatment all result in significant additional stress to the patient and their family.
The launch of this new postgraduate MD program is a historic step towards the end of this exhausting pilgrimage.
This is an important milestone in the fight against cancer in our area as this program will help address the shortage of trained specialists in this field. While having the proper facilities and equipment is critical to having a functioning hospital, the hospital is really only as good as the minds that work there.
GMC Jammu’s introduction of a postgraduate program provides an opportunity for growing local medical expertise in radiation oncology. As these new residents begin their training, not only will they be trained as radiation oncologists, but they will also help to create a sustainable healthcare system.
Working with both state-of-the-art technologies developed specifically for each individual patient and advanced skills, these young radiation oncologists will bring knowledge and expertise to both their patients and their own communities.
These young radiation oncologists will also serve in various settings across the healthcare community. Once their training is complete, these young oncologists will become the resident physicians and will develop their own practices as well as teach the next generation of radiation oncologists.
With the establishment of this relationship, knowledge and care will continue to grow within the caregiving community.
The same holds true for all patients, regardless of their location and access to care. No matter their geographic location, once their therapy is completed, radiation oncology can provide patients with a complete and modern cancer treatment experience, without the displacement that might otherwise be caused by seeking treatment outside of their area.
