Gulmarg shines

With the closing of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2026 in Gulmarg and closing of all of the individual medals earned by the final competitors, we now reach our destination with dreams and hopes; leaving us with only a little bit of white snow dust.

The KIWG Closing Ceremony was not just a celebration for the world-class athletes from our nation; but also a celebration of the resurgence of commitment to make India an integral part of “world winter sports”.

The KIWG exemplified the immense amount of talent that exists in the growing population of competitive athletes representing the nation of India.

Over 900 athletes came from all over India (25 states; Union Territories) and competed in six different sports. The high level of skill and competition can only be described as AMAZING!

Everyone who participated in this collaborative effort was a WINNER! The emergence of all the first-ever athletes to earn medals for their new disciplines (such as the first-ever Gold Medalist Snowboarder in Jammu & Kashmir) and representing a diverse landscape of growing potential for sports in this area of India is a cause for national pride and represents our region and its athletes to the world!

Further, the incredible determination of KIWG athletes (many of whom were involved) to win multiple consecutive Gold Medals in spite of significant adversity and personal loss is a testament to the determination of Khelo India to support these young athletes in developing through sport.

One of the many important milestones declared at the closing ceremony was the long-term vision of Khelo India to develop new partnerships to promote strategic growth and development of winter sports and the next generation of outstanding winter sport participants.

According to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya’s announcement regarding the next Winter Games being held in Gulmarg along with a 15-day integrated sporting festival representing a complete change in direction.

This holistic nature of the event will create an opportunity for seamless sport/tourism/cultural integration within Gulmarg providing a worldwide stage for winter sports similar to that found in Switzerland, as stated by the Minister during an extraordinary opportunity to ski on the hills there.
