Jammu–Srinagar direct train from March 1

Valley now just 5 hours away

Srinagar, Feb 24: The much-awaited direct train service between Jammu and Srinagar will commence from March 1, reducing travel time between the two capital cities to around five hours, officials said on Tuesday.

In a significant boost to rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, Northern Railway has extended the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express up to Jammu, fulfilling a long-pending demand of residents across the region. The extension will ensure seamless rail connectivity between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.

With the service now originating from Jammu, passengers will be able to travel to Srinagar in under five hours — a substantial reduction compared to road travel. The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway frequently faces disruptions due to landslides, snowfall and inclement weather, often leading to prolonged closures. Officials said the Vande Bharat extension will provide a dependable, all-weather alternative, ensuring greater safety, punctuality and comfort for commuters.

The semi high-speed Vande Bharat trains are equipped with modern passenger amenities, advanced safety systems and improved ride comfort, offering faster and more convenient travel. The move is expected to benefit local residents, traders, students and tourists, while also promoting tourism and facilitating trade in the Union Territory.

The extension follows the dedication of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation on June 6, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since then, there has been sustained demand for direct semi high-speed connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar.

Officials said the operationalisation of the direct service marks a key milestone in strengthening infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and reflects the Centre’s commitment to improving connectivity and supporting the region’s socio-economic development.
