A skilled future

The legislative assembly recently announced that 1,64,665 youth from the Jammu & Kashmir region have received training through various skill development initiatives during the past three years. This announcement does not simply provide a statistic; it identifies the intent of the government to promote the future well-being of the population by providing a mechanism for that to occur.

1,64,665 youth represents not only a number of registered trainees; it also represents the dreams and aspirations of a great many youth, the opportunity to enhance their capabilities and become self-sufficient.

In a part of the country where the youth population is a major demographic asset, government-directed skill development is exactly what is necessary for realising this potential.

As such, the focus on skill development signifies an awareness of a simple truth: merely receiving a college degree no longer ensures employment.

By providing youth with relevant workforce skills, the government has created a means to address the critical disparity between educational achievement and employability.

Whether it be in the areas of IT, hospitality, healthcare, traditional craft or modern trades, the government has carefully designed these programs to conform to the needs of the workforce in the 21st century.

The results of this government program will provide positive impacts in a number of areas, particularly economically, where a much more skilled workforce can serve to attract new investment to an area.

As a growing number of young people become capable of entering the workforce, Jammu & Kashmir is seen as a desirable location for businesses and industry, creating a new atmosphere for economic opportunity in an area that previously lacked this possibility.

These changes also lessen the amount of people relying upon government jobs while promoting entrepreneurship and creativity among young people.

Countless young adults working and creating income through their own efforts will result in multiple social benefits such as living with a sense of purpose and dignity to their work.

When a large number of young adults are occupied with positive and productive work, they develop a sense of community and become shareholders in the stability and future growth of their respective communities.

This project provides a positive counterpoint to the feelings of boredom and frustration often experienced by many young people due to being out of work, providing an avenue through which many young adults can be a part of building their communities and nations.

Finally, the project will help to preserve and adapt traditional handcrafts and carpets for the global economy while simultaneously developing digital skills.
