Officials are suggesting that the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, nestled in the hills above Dal Lake, will open sometime around March 15, barring any weather-related difficulties.
Each year when this announcement is made, it is a clear signal that spring has begun to take hold of the Valley.
For everyone living in Kashmir and all of the thousands of people from around the world who plan travel to see it, this blooming of Asia’s largest tulip garden is an incredible source of pride and hope, a beautiful reminder of nature’s resilience, and an ongoing tribute to the hospitality of the people of this region.
The announcement this year carries a greater sense of excitement than normal.
Those working behind the scenes, including the horticultural staff and agriculturists, have been working diligently, often behind the scenes, and deserve a round of applause.
They have not only maintained the garden for the last 30 years but have also improved it to the point where we will be treated to the most stunning display of tulips ever witnessed. Density per acre has increased dramatically and the quality, variety and number of different types of tulips will all be greatly enhanced.
These changes represent a true commitment to continuing to innovate through continual improvement.
The original flower gardens hold more than 30-35 beds of tulips and the patches have increased to over 42 beds. The new beds create a dense and vibrant tapestry of colour providing visitors with an experience that is a true feast for the eye.
With almost 1.8 million tulips across approximately 75 different types of tulips to include many new varieties from the Netherlands, the tulip garden is about to add an unprecedented amount of colour and beauty to the hills of Kashmir.
The tulip garden represents the true essence of Kashmir and what it has to offer the people and the world – peace, beauty and warmth.
This renewed energy within the local economy can be felt equally as strongly by the local shopkeepers and artisans in close proximity to the tulip garden. The opening of the tulip garden represents the beginning of the tourist season, bringing hope and the possibility of income to the community.
