LG, CM, Assembly condoles demise
JAMMU, FEBRUARY 13: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday expressed profound grief over the demise of former ministers Qamar Ali Akhoon and Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah, recalling their contributions to public life and describing them as leaders who served with honesty, dedication and commitment.
In a condolence message, the Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the sudden demise of Qamar Ali Akhoon, former Minister and legislator from Ladakh. Remembering him as a dedicated public figure, Abdullah said Akhoon served the people with commitment and humility throughout his public life.
He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.
The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, condoled the passing away of former Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon.

The Chief Minister also expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Minister Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah. He recalled Shah’s significant contribution to public life and his service to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah extended his sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for strength and courage for them to bear the irreparable loss.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly mourned the demise of former Minister and legislator Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah, who passed away on Friday.
Informing the House, Chairman Mubarik Gul paid rich tributes to the departed leader. The House observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect.
Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon also passed away on Friday, prompting the Assembly to observe a two-minute silence in his honour.
The demise of the senior leader was informed to the Legislative Assembly by NC spokesperson and legislator Tanveer Sadiq. Soon after the announcement, members of the House expressed profound sorrow and paid tributes to his political and public service legacy.
Akhoon, a former Food Minister of the erstwhile state and a prominent political figure from Kargil in the Union Territory of Ladakh, was widely regarded as a seasoned politician who represented Kargil and the Ladakh region with distinction during his tenure in public life.
Hailing from Sangra village in Kargil, he was known for his grassroots connect and administrative experience. He held the Food portfolio and was considered a key voice from the mountainous district during successive political phases of the erstwhile state.
Members across party lines acknowledged his contribution to public welfare and his role in articulating the concerns of people from far-flung and high-altitude areas. Several legislators described him as a committed leader who remained accessible to the masses and worked towards strengthening democratic institutions in the region.
The Assembly observed solemn moments as members remembered his service and extended condolences to the bereaved family. Akhoon’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the political history of Kargil, where he had emerged as one of the most recognisable and influential figures over the years.
