One of the most notable affirmations of the government’s commitment to providing access to all citizens to equitable healthcare is a recent Parliament statement by the Centre which confirmed that there are currently 351 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) providing services across the UT of Jammu & Kashmir.
This does not simply refer to a numeric figure; it represents the quietly unfolding revolution within the UT capable of positively impacting the health, financial well-being and public welfare of every citizen in the region.
As one of the key tenets of the government’s vision to achieve accessibility to quality medicine for everyone, establishment of the PMBJP is a major keystone in the provision of affordable medicine for J&K residents.
In providing generic medicines at prices that are between 50%-80% less than their brand name equivalents, the PMBJP substantially mitigates the ongoing and chronic burden of healthcare costs.
The establishment of 351 Kendras in J&K now makes the benefits of the PMBJP accessible at the grass roots level.
The significance of this continued expansion for residents of J&K can hardly be overstated. Geographical and social/economic factors have traditionally created difficulties for government agencies to deliver services seamlessly to the residents of the region.
Meticulous planning and resolute action led to the successful launch of these Kendras. These Kendras are indications of the creation of bridges of health and wellness in each district through a national initiative for providing affordable healthcare to both urban and rural communities.
Though the Kendras provide direct economic savings to families, they also serve as engines of local entrepreneurship and job creation. An individual entrepreneur runs each Kendra, and they typically live within the community.
This form of entrepreneurship leads to increased access to affordable medications, which in turn improves public health and allows each Kendra to operate as a sustainable micro-enterprise while enhancing self-sufficiency and generating economic activity in the local community.
The success of the PMBJP initiative represents much more than the success of a local project. The success of the PMBJP initiative is also indicative of a larger movement towards integration and development anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the post-2019 period when increasing social and physical infrastructure and investing in a more robust and comprehensive safety net for social security have become of utmost importance.
The PMBJP Kendras are a key part of this endeavor, providing a strong link to affecting positive change in the lives of ordinary people on a daily basis. The PMBJP Kendras are a clear demonstration that the interests of the average citizen will be one of the primary focuses of development in the region.
