Balanced despite constraints: CM

Srinagar, Feb 6: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that despite serious financial constraints, his government has made sustained efforts to provide relief to the most vulnerable sections, defending what he described as a balanced and welfare-oriented Budget.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said the Budget should not be seen in isolation but as part of an ongoing governance framework. He said fiscal decisions are the outcome of policies implemented over time and their phased execution.

“No Budget is a standalone document,” Omar Abdullah said, adding that it reflects continuity in governance rather than a single-year exercise.

He said the administration has followed a people-centric and welfare-driven approach since assuming office, and that groundwork laid over the past year has shaped the current Budget. According to the Chief Minister, the latest financial plan builds on that foundation while keeping long-term fiscal sustainability in view.

Omar Abdullah said the government has deliberately avoided placing excessive strain on the Union Territory’s finances. He said it would be irresponsible to overburden the exchequer or accumulate unsustainable debt merely to fulfil all commitments at once.

Emphasising fiscal prudence, the Chief Minister said responsible financial management remains central to the government’s policy, even as it continues to prioritise social welfare and public support measures. (KNT)
