Winter renaissance

Kashmir’s winter season has been dramatically altered by the recent heavy snowfall in the region. Reports indicate that hotel occupancy in Gulmarg is at 100 percent and hotel occupancy in Sonamarg is currently at 70 percent.

We have all seen these numbers stating the hotel occupancy, however, we are also witnessing the resurgence of hope and livelihood and cultural exchange across this beautiful area.

The snow-draped beautiful scenery in Kashmir has established itself as offering-year-round excitement; and now that winter has also become an adventure-seeker destination for honeymooners and families alike just like summer, fall or spring months.

This increase in visitors is due to the resilience and warm-heartedness of the hospitality provided by the people of Kashmir. Local hoteliers, ski instructors, sled/toboggan operators, artists, and numerous others who earn their living will have prepared for this influx to arrive in Jammu and Kashmir, and because of their preparation, they will reap the benefits through both repeat and new clients.

The economic ripple effect from this surge of domestic and international visitors is proving to be significant; not only to hotels, but also to the many local guides, taxi drivers, local handicraft sellers, and restaurant employees.

The return of international travellers is due to the state’s accessible world-class skiing and also for experiencing the rich culture of this area. The influx of international visitors strongly reaffirms the continuing safety of the UT of Kashmir as well as the warm-hospitable nature of Srinagar and the incredible natural beauty of the UT itself.

The local government deserves a great deal of credit for developing the necessary infrastructure and creating effective snow-management practices, along with successfully promoting winter tourism.

The present success story demonstrates that by supporting good management practices, the natural beauty of Kashmir can provide visitors with enjoyment and support residents’ economic welfare.
