Bridging the distance

The Jammu and Kashmir administration is reaffirming their commitment to assisting the most remote citizens by taking a decisive and compassionate action in restoring the subsidised helicopter services to Gurez Valley and other far-end border areas in North Kashmir.

This service is more than just a logistical decision; it is a crucial lifeline during winter months. The reinstatement of this service sends a strong message that no citizen should be cut off from access to services, therefore no citizen should live with isolation due to geography or seasonal factors.

For resilient border residents, winter is not simply an alteration in weather; it is a yearly siege. Heavy snowfall causes the only surface connection to become severed, placing these valleys under a constant threat of being snowbound for many months.

The result of this isolation is far more damaging than just being an inconvenience; there are tremendous human costs involved; medical emergencies become a serious life threat, interrupted educational access for students, severing of family units, and prolonged suspension of economic activity.

Therefore, the reinstatement of this helicopter service directly protects both the dignity and security of citizens. This also eliminates the tragedy associated with a potential medical emergency; through the airlift process, critical patients have access to medical facilities/hospitals when required.

Additionally, helicopter service is the means by which students are able to get to their examination sites, government officials can provide the required services in their respective constituencies, and families continue to be in contact with each other.

Not only do the transportation services provided by this program move people; they also provide people with hope, a the sense that their Government cares for them and provides the assurance of continued contact with their Government. The establishment of this program is a proactive effort to invest in the future of these strategic border areas.

By providing connectivity, the Department of Transportation is increasing the morale of patriotic citizens that protect the Nation’s borders. Additionally, the service provides a means of infrastructure building and gives these citizens confidence that their State is invested in them year around, not just during the summer months when travel to these regions is possible.

The subsidisation of the service also exemplifies the service’s welfare component; it makes it affordable and financially accessible to the majority of citizens while providing those with limited income the ability to travel.

The timely and compassionate response by the Administration to provide services to these citizens demonstrates that the Administration is listening to, learning from and acting on the ground realities experienced by its citizens.

The establishment of this program serves as an opportunity for the Administration to go beyond the rhetoric that has been previously expressed and to provide tangible and life-changing support to the citizens that require assistance in their daily lives.
