In the south Kashmir forests, a silent story millions of years old awaited to be read. Today marks a great day in the effort to preserve fossil sites as government authorities work to recognise and formally protect three major fossil sites in the Anantnag District.
This effort should be commended as it not only preserves a heritage but also adds value to science and to the education process and creates a sustainable economic future for the region.
The various fossils represent hidden evidence of ancient life, such as flora, marine species and microorganisms that existed thousands of years ago, and give us pages of the Earth’s Diary; and so by identifying, classifying, curating, and protecting these fossil sites, we protect a non-renewable source of scientific information as a resource for generations of researchers to come.
Researchers from the three fossil sites will acquire not only the climate and geology of prehistoric life, but will also gain insight into the development of early life forms and Earth’s early geographic changes.
The creation of fossil parks in Anantnag will convert the region from a scenic wilderness to a living laboratory and as a result gain significant attention at national and international levels for future geological research and education.
The creation of fossil parks in Anantnag will also create opportunities for local communities to develop economic incomes through responsible geological tourism, that would otherwise be lost to the world. While Kashmir has always been known for its beauty and has been associated with its majestic mountains, sparkling lakes, lush gardens, and picturesque towns, it now has a new added, enriching experience to offer visitors.
This initiative shows a refined & matured understanding of heritage where Preservation is no longer about “locking away” Treasures but Rather about “Intelligently” Managing Heritage for the Purpose of Inspiration & Enlightenment. By Providing Protection for These Fossils, the Authorities Will Ensure That generations yet to come will be able to Commence a Relationship with their Grand Past through the narrative of the Stones, describing Resilience & Change before Man Brought Conflict to the Planet.
They also Remind Us Gently of the Vastness of Our Planet’s Timeline and That we are the Stewards of this Planet.
With so much time spent in a world focused on the Immediate, the Preservation of those Ancient Whispers Reinforces Our Collective Humility and Encourages us to think Long-Term.
We desire to celebrate both the Authorities Behind This Effort As Well As the Scientists & Activists Who Spent Countless Hours Working to Preserve & Protect Three Major Fossil Sites In The Anantnag District Of South Kashmir.
Today, as we celebrate another milestone in our efforts to preserve Fossil Sites, we are working Together to Advocate Government Support To Recognise and formally Protect Fossil Sites.
This effort Should Be Recognised Not Only As a Preservation of Heritage But Also an Excellent example of Adding Value To Science, Education, and The Sustainable Economic Development of This Region.
