Srinagar, Jan 6: The Regional Transport Officer on Tuesday clarified that no decision has been taken so far regarding any increase in transport fares, urging commuters not to pay excess charges and to report violations to the department.
Speaking to reporters, the RTO said that if any driver or operator is found charging more than the prescribed fare, people should immediately approach the transport department for action. He said transporter bodies have already been informed about the decision taken by the designated committee and are fully aware that no fare hike has been approved.
The RTO said any unilateral increase in fares would be treated as a violation of rules and strict action would follow against erring operators. He said the department remains committed to protecting the interests of commuters and ensuring transparency in fare regulation.
On traffic congestion in Srinagar city, the RTO said decongestion remains a priority, particularly during peak hours. He said the plying of e rickshaws has been stopped on main roads as part of the effort to ease traffic pressure in busy stretches of the city.
However, he acknowledged that traffic jams do occur during peak hours due to heavy vehicular movement. The RTO said the transport department, in coordination with the traffic police, is continuously working to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion in the city.
He said a combination of regulatory measures, traffic management and public cooperation is essential to address the issue effectively and appealed to commuters and transport operators to follow traffic rules for smoother movement across Srinagar. (CNS)
