Rajouri, Dec 22: An old and rusted mortar shell was recovered on Monday from an area close to Police Station Kalakote in Rajouri district. Officials said the suspicious object was spotted during routine checks, prompting an immediate alert to senior police officers.
Sources said the Bomb Disposal Squad reached the location soon after the recovery and carried out a detailed inspection. The area was sanitised as a precautionary measure while movement around the spot was temporarily restricted.
According to officials, the BDS team later destroyed the mortar shell in a controlled detonation after assessing it to be safe for disposal. They said the shell appeared to have been lying at the spot for a long time.
No injury or damage to property was reported.
Authorities said further verification is underway to ascertain how the shell ended up in the vicinity of the police station. (CNS)
