Srinagar, Dec 15: Kashmir witnessed warmer-than-usual nights for the second day in a row, with minimum temperatures remaining above the freezing point at most places across the Valley, officials said on Monday.
According to the Meteorological Department, the rise in night temperatures was mainly due to overcast conditions and fresh snowfall in higher reaches on Sunday, which prevented sharp heat loss during the night.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 1.9°C, slightly lower than the previous night’s 2°C, but nearly five degrees higher than earlier this week and about 3.1°C above the seasonal average, officials said. Dense fog enveloped Srinagar and several other areas, especially near water bodies, during the early morning hours.
In south Kashmir, Qazigund recorded a minimum of 2.2°C, while Kokernag settled at 2.4°C. Kupwara in north Kashmir registered a low of 1.6°C. Tourist resort Gulmarg reported a minimum temperature of 1°C, the weather office said.
Pahalgam, a key base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, logged a minimum of 2.2°C.
Awantipora in Pulwama district was the coldest location in Jammu and Kashmir, recording minus 0.8°C, while Shopian, at minus 0.1°C, was the only other place where temperatures dipped below the freezing point.
