A major breakthrough for healthcare in the Union Territory, with respect to the expansion of medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, is the announcement by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of significant new funding to support the establishment of an additional medical college in Jammu and Kashmir.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved the creation of this additional medical college and subsequently, the creation of an additional 379 MBBS seats and 118 postgraduate (PG) seats for medical students, as well as the addition of 118 PG seats to support this new medical institution for the academic year 2025-2026.
This is not just an administrative action but is an investment into the future health and healthcare of Jammu/Kashmir and represents an important step towards closing existing health care deficits and building a sustainable and self-reliant health care infrastructure.
Historically, the doctor and patient ratios in Jammu/Kashmir have been a major issue, forcing many prospective students to leave their home region in pursuit of higher education and opportunities for medical training outside the UT.
These new seats will help solve this problem of recruiting medical talent from outside of Jammu and Kashmir. Providing new MBBS and PG medical training opportunities in the UT will enable many talented young people from the region to remain in the vicinity of their families and pursue their medical education.
In addition to the immediate benefits of providing education and training opportunities to students in the JK, there are many additional benefits that will accrue to the region as a result of establishing the new medical college, including the economic impact of establishing a new higher education institution, stimulating the local and regional economies, and increasing the social and physical infrastructure of the region.
The project will help draw Health Care Professionals and Ancillary Services to the region, creating a Health-Driven Hub.
Equally important, this initiative will greatly enhance residents’ access to Health Care. There will be an increase in the number of Doctors and Medical Specialists being trained and most likely practices in the area. As a result, the patients will experience shorter wait times and quicker access to advanced levels of care. Additionally, Patients will not have to travel outside of Jammu and Kashmir for care.
This will also strengthen the entire Health Care Delivery System/Infrastructure, from Primary Health Care, District Hospitals, etc.
This decision is also consistent with the Central Government’s ongoing emphasis on increasing Health Care Infrastructure throughout the country with an emphasis on the neediest areas.
This approach provides a tangible impact on the government’s policies to Decentralise Medical Education and Equitably Distribute Resources To)
The people of Jammu and Kashmir have long-deserved to have a Health Care system that is commensurate with their needs. This expansion is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
