A healing prescription

In a decision that will bolster the very building blocks of health care in the region, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an extra 190 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) seats across five (5) government medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is not just an increase in administrative seats; this is a forward-looking commitment to the health and future of the nation, and should be applauded in earnest.

The importance of this decision is significant on many fronts. First and foremost, it directly addresses the disparity that exists between the need for qualified medical professionals and the number who leave the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir.

For years, capable doctors-in-training who were originally from J&K and filled with potential have been forced to study elsewhere because of a lack of local seats. This announcement means that a whole range of homegrown talent can be trained at home.

These student’s will be familiar with the local culture, language, and a number of health challenges discussed above, which means it is likely that these new medical students will return to their communities when they graduate and become doctors and more health care providers. Thereby guaranteeing that the benefits of the investment stay in place.

This is an empowering approach to ensuring equitable health care expansion. As more medical graduates emerge from medical schools and universities, this will eventually benefit primary health care centres, district hospitals, remote medical outposts and any levels of the health care system.

It will lower the patient-to-doctor ratio, relieve the burdens of overworked medical practitioners, and ultimately enhance the care delivered and distribution of care for every citizen.

This will be a significant step towards closing the urban-rural health gap and for establishing a stronger public health return, a lesson relearned during the last pandemic.

Furthermore, the NMC’s approval/bill indicates a stronger commitment to the continuing enhancement of J&K’s educational infrastructure. By empowering its medical colleges as temples of learning and healing, the NMC and Government have stood even more firmly behind the region’s academic ecosystem.

This commitment supports more research specifically on health issues related to the region, establishes a prestige for academic institutions/ programs that will attract better faculty, and enhances the elements of academic and clinical excellence that health regions rely on.
