Riding a new wave

A new chapter is being written on the glistening waters of Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake! From August 21 to 23, this jewel of Kashmir will go from being a serene vacation and pleasure haven to an athletic hub of energy and national pride as it will be the host of the first Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF)!

Imagine athletes from 36 states and union territories gliding their oars and blades through the pristine waters of the Dal Lake, with the Zabarwan Mountains providing an awe-inspiring backdrop. This image will fill the heart and mind of every Indian with overwhelming pride!

Over 400 participants will compete in the sports of rowing, canoeing, and kayaking, which require immense strength, stamina, and synchrony in racing together. But the greatest victory is not only about winning a medal, but sending a positive message.

As a starting point, this festival is a stroke of brilliance in raising Jammu and Kashmir’s profile as an adventure and eco-tourism destination.

For too long our region’s narrative has focused on challenges and adversity. We are now rightfully getting to a place where the narrative is about potential and possibilities without parallel.

The world will soon know Dal Lake, not just for its shikaras and houseboats, but as a world-class venue hosting national sporting events.

It may produce a new economic outlet which will create employment for individuals in hospitality, event management and local guiding industries, and it may also provide a platform to engage the youth in discovering their natural landscape through sporting activities.

Moreover, it is the perfect platform for the Khelo India initiative’s mission, to locate and develop sporting talent across the nation.

For Kashmir’s youth, who have inner natural physical strength and resilience to leverage, they get to be a front row spectator to high-level competition.

Seeing these athletes in competition, may start a passion for water sports, which is a positive, healthy and aspirational release for their energy.

It plants that seed that a kid from Srinagar can one day represent India on the international podium in these sports.

This is also a lovely example of national integration, as when the athletes from across the country arrive in the Valley, they will be sending a strong message of ‘Unity in Diversity’, while pursuing their passion for sport.
