A landmark move

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) should be congratulated on its plan for a 20-kilometre Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) pipeline coming from Sempora to Srinagar International Airport.

The proposed development from PNGRB is developing reliable and efficient fuel supply to airlines registered in Jammu and Kashmir, contributions from cost efficiencies for transportation, and additional capacity to enhance aviation in the state.

The proposed pipeline would more efficiently supply 0.5 MMT supply of ATF per annum to airlines in the region, utilizing a efficient ATF supply chain through which doesnotrely on tanker trucks.

The tanker option will always be subject to deteriorating and complicated mechanics of logistical supply as costs increase; and delays in supply from fuel delivery being subject to freight costs, inclement weather and road congestions for the transport of trailers on public roadways.

A pipeline system will typically satisfy the softer items in the environmental protection criteria for transporting fuels, but it will also be more secure and stable and, probably more affordable for airline operators and their passengers, which is available almost anywhere with pipelines in their vicinity.

As a result, there would be value preservedto passengers, as well the airlines.

The proposal presents a base infrastructure development tool and, will represent new objectives for economic development and regional connectivity for Jammu and Kashmir.

The establishment of a stable supply of ATF will create an incentive for more flight ops that will create more competitive airfares and therefore foster tourism and trade in the Valley.

Moving aviation fuel away from road transport will ease congestion and reduce carbon emissions and therefore, contribute to sustainability.

The steps being taken by the PNGRB to initiate this project highlights the organization’s commitment to modernizing India’s energy systems.

The Srinagar ATF pipeline, when commissioned, will establish a model for similar projects in various parts of the country and enhance India’s pursuit of becoming a rapidly emerging aviation market.

It is positive policy progress that should be recognized and executed in a timely manner.

The Centre, state government, and stakeholders have a collective responsibility to ensure timely execution leading toan environment that develops a better-connected, and better off entity in Jammu and Kashmir.
