Jammu and Kashmir is a significant producer and exporter of honey in India, as demonstrated by the recent success being ranked 10th amongst the other states and Union Territories.
This success is also a great example of both the untapped potential of apiculture in the region as well as the impacts of strategic investments and local expertise on turning traditional sectors into growth engines of the economy.
The Jammu and Kashmir zone has ample varieties of abundant flora, making it a perfect zone for the beekeeping hobby/practice. High quality pure honey is collected from green valleys and organic pastures, and Jammu and Kashmir has sturdy credentials when it comes to certifying an ideal setting for an important traditional economic activity.
With global popularity and demand for natural and organic goods continuing to grow, the Union Territory will have a massive benefit from these circumstances.
Schemes like the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) empowered farmers on the ground level of apiculture. Several of these schemes and missions empowered farmers to promote scientific methods which increase yield and framework for honey clusters, quality standards, and processing units to increase production capacity.”
As such, honey production is not only a source of income to thousands of farmers based in Jammu and Kashmir, but it is also becoming an important export product.
In doubling India’s honey exports by 2030, the part that will be played by Jammu and Kashmir will be vital. Honey of Kashmir is becoming well-respected and sought out for its purity and remedial values in the international sector, which will also strengthen the whole sector further.
While this has all gone very well, there is significant potential that remains uncharted. Here, strengthening cold storage facilities, increasing beekeepers prices, and attaining international product quality certifications will bring Jammu and Kashmir to the standards of the foremost honey-producing states in India.
Developing and promoting beekeeping tourism, with value-added products like beeswax and royal jelly, will expand revenue streams. The increase of honey production and marketing in Jammu and Kashmir is a testament to the hard work of farmers and the support of government to agriculture in the region.
Beyond that however, through investments in infrastructure development, research, and in market linkages, the region can cement its role as an excellent hub for quality honey, which will not only benefit local economies, but support India’s ambitious plans to expand global honey exports.
