Empowering marriages

The Jammu and Kashmir government has recently announced its decision to enhance the financial assistance under the State Marriage Assistance Scheme to families of girls who are holders of Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration cards, specifically increasing the amount from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000. This is an excellent and socially transformative initiative.

This development not only sets forth an affirmation of commitment from the administration to underprivileged homes, but it will strengthen the equitable treatment and empowerment of women.

Marriage can be a financial burden for an economically disadvantaged family, particularly in a rural or marginalized setting. For a family to provide for a daughter even the most basic necessities they either go into debt or stop paying for other critical areas of spending like education and health care.

The lifting of the burden by the government increases assistance under SMAS, and allows families to celebrate such an important event in their lives with dignity. The approach of identifying AAY ration card holders as targeted beneficiaries also gives credence to the funding and delivery supports going to the eldest cohort of people who are most vulnerable to economic hardship in society.

Assistance specifically targeted by Antyodaya Anna Yojana for selection as ‘the poorest of the poor’ denotes policy consideration and sensibility. This is an effort to not only relieve immediate financial burden, but set a foundation for long-term social welfare by reducing economic burden for disadvantaged homes.

To better frame this step within broader efforts in gender equity, assistance with marriage for girls is one way to consider the overall improvement of women’s situations. With less financial burden on marriage, more could potentially be invested in their daughters’ education and health for a more equitable society.

It now has to set into motion proper implementation, transparency, and education about the scheme so all eligible beneficiaries can access the scheme without barriers.

While such a measure is a step in the right direction, it encourages the government to undertake welfare measures in similar fashions where skills and employment options are opened for woman and at a minimum, achieve financial independence in the long term. Policies must ensure that schemes like the SMAS build a more empowered women beyond matrimony.

In fact, this progressive and sympathetic move to build financial assistance through the SMAS should be recognized. Moving forward, whenever possible, these initiatives are prioritized to make a more equitable and better future for Jammu and Kashmir.
