Ready to shine

The celebrated tourist Ski Resort-Gulmarg is about to host the second leg of the 5th Khelo India Winter Games from March 9 to 12. The announcement comes as a relief and a moment of celebration for athletes, organizers, and enthusiasts.

Arrangements for the event were initially halted due to inadequate snowfall, thus certainly reinforcing the effect of climate variability and, on the other hand, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of our sporting ecosystem.

As is evident, Khelo India Winter Games are an important government initiative to mainstream winter sports in India and harness the talent in this country, where these disciplines have for too long been neglected. Gulmarg provides a perfect platform to prove to the world that winter sports in India deserve recognition.

Standing proudly with its sweeping slopes and top-level infrastructure, the valley is home to all forms of snow sliding: skiing, snowboarding, and alpine. Hosting such an event strengthens its claim to being India’s winter sports capital.

The earlier decision to hold these games this year was disrupted by a lack of suitable snow-a reminder of how far-reaching climate change is in influencing sporting events, especially those that are contingent on natural conditions.

The very act of rescheduling demonstrates commitment-on the part of all involved-to fostering winter sports and the athletes in particular; an act of resolve by the organizers in keeping safety and quality as a priority rather than expedience.

This year’s Khelo India Winter Games will turn into a real spectacle of skill, determination, and sportsmanship. Riveting athletes from all over the country will compete in disciplines like alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, and ice hockey, among many others.

For many participants, it would be more of an opportunity than a competition, as events like this would allow him or her to exhibit one’s talent nationally and inspire many would-be enthusiasts of winter sports.

However, the influx of athletes, officials, and spectators will also benefit the local economy, especially to hotels, restaurants, and other small-scale businesses in that area.

The post-postponement was due to meager snowfall, thus giving everyone a wake-up call. It really needs sustainable practices in both sports and tourism to conserve the beauty of the place and let future generations enjoy its slopes.
